are you the freaky, panicky and hassle kind when it comes to cutting your hair? or are you the cool, calm and compose kind that breeze into a salon and come out happy?

Well I am a bit of both with a slight incline to the first type. But it also depends in which phase I am in. I am the second type when I know and trust the person cutting my hair. When the hair artist is tried and tested and I’ve been going to her/him for many many sittings. I hate being in the first type. I experiment a lot with my hair and I’m usually paranoid and cranky. But we all have to go through the first type to reach the second type, don’t we. Finding the right hair dresser is as important as finding the right life partner if not more. The sad part though you have to leave your hair dresser behind when you move :) . But, for a long time I would travel from Hyderabad to Bombay for a haircut. So you see I didn’t leave my hair dresser behind :D . This continued for a while till it became a lot more painful going to Bombay.

One of the most difficult part of moving to the US was leaving my hair dresser behind and going through the painful process of finding the perfect hair dresser all over again. One would think that with New York being a fashionable place there would be awesome hair dressers all around and finding ‘the’ person/place would be a cakewalk. Well, yes and no. I didn’t like some, some didn’t like me and the ones that expressed mutually positive feelings were way way way way way expensive. This coming from a person like me who does not flinch with that extra extra little for quality. So!

Sometimes we don’t realized that the goodies are in fact in our own backyard. This was the case with my now beloved hair salon. I’ve passed by this place numerous times, sometime sneaking a quick peep but never venturing in. I was a little afraid actually. The place seemed a little bit too funky. It was a part salon, part boutique, part art gallery, part studio part part part…….I saw punks and drag queens and bikers and a few regular people in the shop. I was shit scared of what they would do to my hair there. Funnily though, I had a positive vibe about the place. So I did a little bit of online research, stared hard enough at their website for a few days and finally took the plunge. I thought what the hell! I’ve had worst hair cuts before..how bad will it be? I knew I was taking a big risk and I could be scarred for a long time. I was going in for a short short hair cut you see, and it can either be a hit or miss. No in between. Thank God it was a hit!! My hair dresser who is also the owner of the salon and also an artist is a groovy woman. She sings and dance around while she cuts. She has short short hair herself and the last time I was there, her hair was painted purple and it was right after Obama was elected president, so she was also dressed in blue and red and white. I was terrified the first time she cut my hair. She just didn’t stop cutting till she was completely satisfied and she warned me, not to cry in her shop, if I didn’t like my cut :D heee hee. I trust her instincts so much now. I simply sit on the chair and ask her to do what she pleases. I’m never sure what she’ll churn out but I’ve never been disappointed.

Today, when I went in for my nTH haircut I learned that she’s been recently ordained as a Reverend through an online certification process and can solemnize a marriage. So she’s now a part artist, a part salon/boutique owner, a part movie maker (YES), a part Reverend and a part godknowswhatelse. How cool is that! My hair artist rocks and today I have yet another awesome groovy cut ;) .

I feel good!

I have long straight hair & the most adventurous thing I do with it is cut 2 inches off…so I havent felt all those dhak dhak feelings:-D.

Yeah once in a while I feel like perming my hair, but never quite gathered the courage to…….sigh grass is always greener on the other side;-P.

Travelled from hyd to bombay just to cut hair…..:-o

Wow. She sounds like a really rocking woman. And you’re very insightful as usual:) I went from phase 1 to phase 2. Used to hate cutting my hair beyond the absolute necessary bit for split ends. Now I experiment all the time.

My last experiment involved 2 bright red streaks. Fun.

Ha..Luky You! You have a hair artist at ur disposal :)
I am so scared about getting a hair cut, because 9 out of 10 times, I never like it. So I rarely expt. If a style works for me, I just go with it until I get bored!

But, finding the right hair dresser is some task I tell you. Especially when we are looking for someone we can trust, and ask to do whatever they please.

I am so jealous of u right now ;)

ha ha! wonderfully funny post! :) Ok here`s my two cents :

“She sings and dance around while she cuts”

Err..I`d rather not have her do it too often! :) Not during the hair cut session atleast!

Well, I am paranoid about my hair. And so, for months after arriving here in the US, I wouldnt go to a salon – for fear of not understanding the accent of the hair dresser and vice versa!
And also because it took me a while to come out of hibernation, after the positively scary cut I got from Loreal`s right before I left Kolkata! Even the G was startled! So I know what you`re talking about, girl!

Sample this: But we all have to go through the first type to reach the second type, don’t we.

You are so right, A. But you travelled a lot between Hyderabad and Mumbai for a haircut!!!! (Rolling Eyes)

Great you have settled down with the nearest and the cool multifaceted woman.

No…no I dont have very long hair now…at one time I had thick waist length hair but now lost a lot of hair after pregnancies, so shortened it to 3 inches below the shoulder. If it grows longer it looks lousy:-S

    @Agnes & A….very funny……:-P

oh I know how difficult it is to find ‘just the right hair cut artist’ :) Yours sounds wonderful. I finally found mine and am gonna stick with her through thick and thin- I like her coz she doesn’t talk alot. (although on this visit I did find out her entire history…but for the price of a great hair cut, I can afford the history tour) :)

I am sick of them but have never in my life got my hair cut…

  26. 2009 February 16

fussy about my hair? mmmm…maybe im not very fussy. i love experimenting with my hair. colouring it, cutting it, trying it out something new. or maybe i used to be able to do that very easily till a couple of years back. my logic would be its hair and it will eventually grow out.

now, im rather careful. like, i feel like getting bangs or a fringe. been thinking about it for the past 10 days. still havent gotten around it. 2 years back, the thinking bit would have lasted 10 mins!!!

maybe if i had ur hairdresser, i wouldnt be worried :) she sounds awesome.
